J. Sterling Morton (originally from Detroit, Michigan) is credited with getting the ball rolling back in 1872, proposing a tree-planting holiday. He moved to Nebraska, a vast prairie. Morton wanted to do something to improve the quality of life in his new home, so through his role as a journalist, he educated the public on the importance of trees. Thanks to Morton’s efforts, the first Arbor Day was held on April 10, 1872. By 1874. Arbor Day became a legal holiday in Nebraska and by 1920, it was a National holiday! Originally, that date was April 22nd, which honored Morton’s birthday of the same date but was since changed to the last Friday in April.
