Another World

She threatened to kill herself because then they would listen. She saw imaginary bugs and was blinded by nonexistent lights. The ceiling was dripping water on her.

Curse words flew like salt from a shaker. Everyone had to stay at least three feet away. She knew the voices in the hall belonged to her family members and everyone was lying when they told her she was mistaken.

They did move her from the nursing home to the psych ward of a local hospital. For observation, they said. All bets are on as to whether they’ll ever see her again.

Hear Me Now

Of course, she had to tell everyone their business, she had nothing else to do with her time. She was the only one with wisdom. The only one who had it together. Everyone needed to benefit from her life experiences.

Well, not everyone. Most people couldn’t wait to be out of her presence. Backing away from the prolonged conversations. Casually glancing at their watches and praying someone would text them to be somewhere else.

Loneliness takes on many forms. Needing to be needed is one. Unfortunately, she had overstayed her welcome and would soon find herself even lonelier yet.

Meals on Wheels

She walked to the grocery store every week but took the jitney home. She was living in the inner city on her own and didn’t have a car.

One day, she was struggling with her groceries and a man called out to her. “Excuse me, miss. I can drive you home if you like.” She hesitated. He was a stranger and she wasn’t about to get into his car.

An older lady, waiting for the bus spoke up. “Don’t worry, child, that’s the neighborhood jitney. It’s cheaper than a cab and he only helps people home from the store.”

Safety Glass

Charli Mills invited us to write about storm windows this week. Her weekly 99 word Flash Fiction challenges are fun and give us all the opportunity to polish our storytelling skills.

Ear-splitting thunder followed by spectacular lightning; she loved storms. She didn’t like being out in them. No sir, if she was planning to drive someplace and heard about a storm brewing, plans had to be changed. She didn’t even want to be a passenger during a storm.

Wrapped up in her flannel robe with a cup of golden milk to sip, she cocked her head to look beyond the trees. BOOM! The thunder sounded another battle cry followed by the brilliant light seeming to split the sky. Thank goodness for the triple pane windows between her and the storm.

winter’s wonder

The magic of the first snow. Filling the imagination of the young with possibilities. No school. Playing outside for hours and hours. Balls of snow and men of snow. Forts and angels.

The magic of the first snow. Traveling from the sky to the ground in varying degrees of speed. Lazy and sporadic. Swirling delicate as though nothing were really there. The fat dancing flakes.

The magic of the first snow. Frosting green everywhere. Piling up in window corners creating frames from which to gaze. Fluffy white pillows upon every flat surface. Glistening jewels in the bright noonday sun.
