All Darrell Henshaw wanted was to enjoy his honeymoon with his beautiful wife, Erin, in the charming town of Crystal River on the sunny Gulf Coast of Florida. Only a pair of ghosts decide to intrude on their celebration. And not just any ghosts, the spirits of two young Latino children. Unwilling at first to derail the honeymoon for yet another ghost hunt, Darrell finally concedes when a painting of the kids comes alive, weeping and pleading for his help.

When he and Erin track down the artist, they discover the children’s family were migrant workers the next county over. But when they travel there, their questions about the kids get their car shot up and Erin hospitalized. Torn between fear and rage, Darrell must decide how far he will go to get justice for two young children he never even knew.

Erin Caveny is the girlfriend, fiancé, and, eventually, wife of Darrell Henshaw, the teacher/coach/ghost whisperer and hero of the award-winning Haunted Shores Mysteries. The two of them met in the first entry (and #1 Amazon Best Seller), BLOOD ON THE CHESAPEAKE, and fell in love. Then in the second, CRIMSON AT CAPE MAY (also an Amazon Best Seller), their relationship went on the rocks for a while until they rescue it together. In the third installment out this year, SCARLET AT CRYSTAL RIVER, Darrell and Erin have just gotten married and are heading on their honeymoon, until they get derailed by some desperate ghosts.

Q: You and Darrell just got married. Let me first say congratulations.

Erin: Thanks. We had a beautiful Christmas wedding and I’d say, an interesting honeymoon.

Q: Darrell has been interviewed several times, but readers haven’t had the chance to hear directly from you. We’re delighted to have you with us here on our blog. What would you like to share with our readers first?

Erin: Thanks so much for having me. I love the part I play in these tales, but I’m thrilled to have a voice here. I think first I’d like to say thanks to all the readers who’ve written in to say how much they enjoy my character in the stories. From their comments, it appears I have some kindred spirits out there.

Q: Can you tell us about how you met Darrell?

Erin: Sure. We were set up by our good friends, Al and Sara McClure. Al works with Darrell at the high school and Sara is an OB nurse with me. I won’t say it was love at first sight, but Darrel and I hit it off pretty quickly. It’s not always been easy with Darrell, but we do okay.

Q: Our readers are dying to know what’s it like to be with a guy like Darrell.

Erin: Well, he’s geeky, but pretty good-looking too. For a guy, he’s thoughtful and considerate, and he and I are both dedicated to children, him being a teacher and me an OB nurse. So we have that in common.

Q: I think our readers would like to know what it’s like being with a guy with Darrell’s…special talents.

Erin: Oh, you mean the ghost thing. Well, it’s true he sees ghosts, and he has some problems with OCD. But, hey, everyone has their secrets. And, besides, life with Darrell is never boring. Excitement, suspense, and thrills just seem to find Darrell—or I should say the ghosts find Darrell and they bring the rest. I love not knowing what’s next and helping us cope with it.

Q: You said everyone has their secrets. Can you divulge some of yours?

Erin: I don’t think so. Not here in public. Readers will just have to read the books to find out.

In the new novel, SCARLET AT CRYSTAL RIVER, you and Darrell travel to Florida for your honeymoon, which is interrupted by a pair of ghosts. Didn’t you resent having to detour your romantic plans to go ghost chasing?

Erin: Okay, I’ll admit, the honeymoon did not turn out the way I imagined. But, hanging around Darrell, I’ve learned you can’t always control what comes your way. When I first found out about the ghosts’ intrusions, I was pretty upset. But, as I began to get pieces of the story and looked into those little kids’ eyes in that painting, I knew we had to find a way to help them. Darrell and I have the rest of our lives together but the young children needed our help right then. Besides, we still got to do plenty of cool stuff, like swimming with manatees. Wait till you read about it. It was an unforgettable experience.

Question: You know we have to ask this one question: do you really believe in ghosts?

Erin: Of course, the answer is yes. Before I met Darrell I wasn’t sure. You’d probably call me a skeptic then. But after everything I’ve seen with Darrell—okay I can’t see what Darrell sees, but I’ve seen plenty—ghosts writing on mirrors, ghosts leaving messages on paper, and those shimmering images of the two kids on our photos from Florida—how could I not believe?

Question: So, what’s next for you and Darrell? You’re married now, both of you working back in Wilshire.

Erin: Now we’re just trying out this newly-married couple thing. We both love our jobs but we also both want kids. We haven’t set any timetable for the family stuff. I think we’ll just let nature take its course. Oh, we are talking about a trip back to his home in Michigan, maybe in the summer months when he has some time off. He wants me to meet the rest of the family including his Aunt Bessie, who owns this big place on Lake Erie. Sounds like fun. I just hope it’s a little more peaceful than our trip to Florida. I don’t think Darrell said anything about ghosts back home. I’ll have to ask him.

Thanks, Erin, for joining us here. Readers can learn more about this interesting character by picking up any one—or better yet, all three—of the Haunted Shores Mysteries, BLOOD ON THE CHESAPEAKE, CRIMSON AT CAPE MAY, and SCARLET AT CRYSTAL RIVER.

GIVEAWAYS:  (4) e-book copies of A GHOST AND HIS GOLD

A Ghost and His Gold

What is a poltergeist?

The word poltergeist is derived from the German for “loud ghost” or “noisy spirit”. A poltergeist is a type of spirit or ghost that can create physical disturbances in the real world such as making loud noises and moving objects or even destroying them. It is also believe in ghostlore, that poltergeists can pinch, bit, hit, and trip people, as well as being able to levitate objects and move them around.

The film, The Exorcist, is based on the ‘real-life’ haunting of a 13-year-old boy referred to as ‘Roland Doe’ in 1940. After the death of his aunt, Doe began to experience strange occurrences whereby his mattress would move, a mysterious liquid dripped from the walls of his bedroom, and scratching noises came from beneath the floor.

His parents asked a local priest to perform and exorcism on their son, but the exorcism was never completed because Doe injured the priest with a spring from his mattress.

Doe’s parents took him to St Louis for another exorcism. The attending priests noted that mysterious scratches appeared on his body and his mattress moved violently. The boy also entered trance-like states and spoke in a guttural voice. A mysterious “X” was also carved into his chest.

A final exorcism took place, and this time it was successful.

An extract from A Ghost and His Gold relating to the poltergeist, Estelle:

“Michelle slips off her bathrobe and stands on the edge of the pool. Dipping her right foot into the cold water, she shivers violently, and jerks it out again.

“It’s really cold, Alice.”

Alice rushes up to the edge and leaps in, hitting the water with a huge splash and sinking below the surface. Her face breaks through the roughened surface and she squeals with laughter, just like a small child.

“Come on, Michelle,” she calls.

A dark shadow hurtles across the surface of the water like a torpedo rom an old war movie. Michelle’s mouth gapes open as it whistles past her. A ripple of displaced air causes her to jerk her head around just in time to see the shadow perform a tight U-turn and head back towards her. It thuds into her like a cannon ball and she flies forward and drops into the water like a sack of potatoes. Her head surfaces and she gulps air.

“You whore!”

The words float on the air as the shape darts around the pool. They seem to bounce off the mosaiced edging.

“Your husband is a rapist and a murderer, but you refuse to acknowledge it.”

Cold hands press down on Michelle’s face. The water is too deep for her to stand in this part of the pool and she can’t muster the force necessary to push back against the downward force. Her head slips into the icy water which fills her eyes, nose and ears. Adrenalin fuelled strength floods her body and she fights ferociously against the determined spirit pining her down. Her lungs are ready to burst when the pressure suddenly releases and her head bursts out of the water, like a cork from a champagne bottle.

“I’m going to kill you, whore,” the voice snarls at her.

From this close, the shadow has features. Large piercing green eyes glow in a pale face, so fair the fine scattering of freckles on her nose stand out like dark marks. Recognition stirs as she gazes into the eyes of the young girl who had revealed her presence, firstly on her computer screen, and then on the television.

The spirit’s thin face is surrounded by a thick mass of straight blonde hair that falls well below her shoulders.

The same blonde hair I saw in the shower drain.

Despite her youth, the ghost looks about fifteen or sixteen years old, evil pulses from her like a deviant heartbeat and a wicked red light burns within the depths of her brilliant eyes.

“Why? Why must you kill me? What have I done?” screeches Michelle, her eyes dilated with fear.

“Why?” the girl throws back her head and laughs. “Because you knew that he was guilty of rape and murder but did nothing to bring him to justice.”

“But I didn’t know,” Michelle cries.

“Yes, you did know. There were signs all around you. You chose to ignore them just like my father chose to ignore my mother’s abuse of me,” the ghost’s voice drops to a low tone, but it still reverberates through the air. “She neglected and ignored me and, when the worst thing that could happen to me did, she rejected me and said I was unclean and defiled. I hated her almost as much as I hated him. My father, Pieter van Zyl.”

Her hands reach out again and deliberately push Michelle down be-neath the dark water. Numb with cold and shock, Michelle struggles against the downward pressure.”

After Tom and Michelle Cleveland move into their recently built, modern townhouse, their housewarming party is disrupted when a drunken game with an Ouija board goes wrong and summons a sinister poltergeist, Estelle, who died in 1904.

Estelle makes her presence known in a series of terrifying events, culminating in her attacking Tom in his sleep with a knife. But, Estelle isn’t alone. Who are the shadows lurking in the background – one in an old-fashioned slouch hat and the other, a soldier, carrying a rifle?

After discovering their house has been built on the site of one of the original farms in Irene, Michelle becomes convinced that the answer to her horrifying visions lie in the past. She must unravel the stories of the three phantoms’ lives, and the circumstances surrounding their untimely deaths during the Second Anglo Boer War, in order to understand how they are tied together and why they are trapped in the world of ghosts between life and death. As the reasons behind Estelle’s malevolent behaviour towards Tom unfold, Michelle’s marriage comes under severe pressure and both their lives are threatened.

Day 5 – Blog Post

Jamie Griffin, our roguish young Irishman, made his debut in The Enigma Gamers. He initially appears in the Macau high-end nightclub, adjusting the casino’s slot machines. Jamie works as a contractor, along with his love interest Frieda who is in the data operations side of the business. Jamie convinced Frieda to take this on as an opportunistic gig for the massive payoff in this rich target environment.

Julie and Juan, heads of our cyber assassin establishment technology services (CATS) team, are vacationing in the region. The pair decide to enjoy a new state-of-the-art nightspot using lots of artificially intelligent-enabled components. Julie spots Jamie’s covert skimming that deftly avoids the cameras and artificially intelligent robots serving the casino guests. They chuckled at his sleight of hand, marveling at the risks the young man took.

The CATS team crosses paths with the rogue Irishman along with Frieda in the threads of this story. Readers fondly commented on Jamie, and in The Enigma Dragon, we had an excellent opportunity to bring him back. In The Enigma Dragon, he deepens his relationship with the CATS team and provides clues to their working case.

Ernesto, Jamie’s primary contact, likes the young man, taking him under his wing. Enjoy this audible extract for insight into Jamie.

Ernesto discovers the additional layers to Jamie along with this talent for Irish blarney. This young man has the rare gift to sell the improbable, much like selling a refrigerator to Eskimos.

Readers and fans commented on Jamie. They liked his contribution to the story and sent emails wondering about his background and family life.  We dedicated Destiny Dreamer as the background on his early life and lessons learned as he grew up.

Characters in our stories are multifaceted people. Their interactions, life challenges, and travels make an impact on the soul. We invite you to explore Jamie’s beginnings, meet his family as he learns the depth and breadth of the heart of an Irishman.

We encourage you to post your review and let us know if Jamie should continue to appear in our novels of the Enigma Series.

About the Short Story

Jamie started life as a carefree lad in Ireland, living in a farm family. When his brother Ian was born, he vowed to show him all the best things as a big brother. They became best friends from the time Jamie taught Ian to drive a tractor. Their bonding exercises as young men was rebuilding a motorcycle from a box of greasy old parts. They traveled to learn their destiny together.

Jamie met his love Frieda as he ventured into a new career in technology as their paths crossed on a bus. The relationship blossomed into a family. The future looked bright for the young lovers.

Jamie faces emotional highs and lows as he travels. His one consistency is the bus rides to find hope for his future.

Where will his future lead him?
