Welcome to Day 8 of THE HAUNTED SHORES MYSTERIES BLOG TOUR FEATURING “SCARLET AT CRYSTAL RIVER” @OverbeckRandy @4WillsPub @4WP11
All Darrell Henshaw wanted was to enjoy his honeymoon with his beautiful wife, Erin, in the charming town of Crystal River on the sunny Gulf Coast of Florida. Only a pair of ghosts decide to intrude on their celebration. And not just any ghosts, the spirits of two young Latino children. Unwilling at first to derail the honeymoon for yet another ghost hunt, Darrell finally concedes when a painting of the kids comes alive, weeping and pleading for his help.
When he and Erin track down the artist, they discover the children’s family were migrant workers the next county over. But when they travel there, their questions about the kids get their car shot up and Erin hospitalized. Torn between fear and rage, Darrell must decide how far he will go to get justice for two young children he never even knew.
INTERVIEW WITH ERIN
Erin Caveny is the girlfriend, fiancé, and, eventually, wife of Darrell Henshaw, the teacher/coach/ghost whisperer and hero of the award-winning Haunted Shores Mysteries. The two of them met in the first entry (and #1 Amazon Best Seller), BLOOD ON THE CHESAPEAKE, and fell in love. Then in the second, CRIMSON AT CAPE MAY (also an Amazon Best Seller), their relationship went on the rocks for a while until they rescue it together. In the third installment out this year, SCARLET AT CRYSTAL RIVER, Darrell and Erin have just gotten married and are heading on their honeymoon, until they get derailed by some desperate ghosts.
Q: You and Darrell just got married. Let me first say congratulations.
Erin: Thanks. We had a beautiful Christmas wedding and I’d say, an interesting honeymoon.
Q: Darrell has been interviewed several times, but readers haven’t had the chance to hear directly from you. We’re delighted to have you with us here on our blog. What would you like to share with our readers first?
Erin: Thanks so much for having me. I love the part I play in these tales, but I’m thrilled to have a voice here. I think first I’d like to say thanks to all the readers who’ve written in to say how much they enjoy my character in the stories. From their comments, it appears I have some kindred spirits out there.
Q: Can you tell us about how you met Darrell?
Erin: Sure. We were set up by our good friends, Al and Sara McClure. Al works with Darrell at the high school and Sara is an OB nurse with me. I won’t say it was love at first sight, but Darrel and I hit it off pretty quickly. It’s not always been easy with Darrell, but we do okay.
Q: Our readers are dying to know what’s it like to be with a guy like Darrell.
Erin: Well, he’s geeky, but pretty good-looking too. For a guy, he’s thoughtful and considerate, and he and I are both dedicated to children, him being a teacher and me an OB nurse. So we have that in common.
Q: I think our readers would like to know what it’s like being with a guy with Darrell’s…special talents.
Erin: Oh, you mean the ghost thing. Well, it’s true he sees ghosts, and he has some problems with OCD. But, hey, everyone has their secrets. And, besides, life with Darrell is never boring. Excitement, suspense, and thrills just seem to find Darrell—or I should say the ghosts find Darrell and they bring the rest. I love not knowing what’s next and helping us cope with it.
Q: You said everyone has their secrets. Can you divulge some of yours?
Erin: I don’t think so. Not here in public. Readers will just have to read the books to find out.
In the new novel, SCARLET AT CRYSTAL RIVER, you and Darrell travel to Florida for your honeymoon, which is interrupted by a pair of ghosts. Didn’t you resent having to detour your romantic plans to go ghost chasing?
Erin: Okay, I’ll admit, the honeymoon did not turn out the way I imagined. But, hanging around Darrell, I’ve learned you can’t always control what comes your way. When I first found out about the ghosts’ intrusions, I was pretty upset. But, as I began to get pieces of the story and looked into those little kids’ eyes in that painting, I knew we had to find a way to help them. Darrell and I have the rest of our lives together but the young children needed our help right then. Besides, we still got to do plenty of cool stuff, like swimming with manatees. Wait till you read about it. It was an unforgettable experience.
Question: You know we have to ask this one question: do you really believe in ghosts?
Erin: Of course, the answer is yes. Before I met Darrell I wasn’t sure. You’d probably call me a skeptic then. But after everything I’ve seen with Darrell—okay I can’t see what Darrell sees, but I’ve seen plenty—ghosts writing on mirrors, ghosts leaving messages on paper, and those shimmering images of the two kids on our photos from Florida—how could I not believe?
Question: So, what’s next for you and Darrell? You’re married now, both of you working back in Wilshire.
Erin: Now we’re just trying out this newly-married couple thing. We both love our jobs but we also both want kids. We haven’t set any timetable for the family stuff. I think we’ll just let nature take its course. Oh, we are talking about a trip back to his home in Michigan, maybe in the summer months when he has some time off. He wants me to meet the rest of the family including his Aunt Bessie, who owns this big place on Lake Erie. Sounds like fun. I just hope it’s a little more peaceful than our trip to Florida. I don’t think Darrell said anything about ghosts back home. I’ll have to ask him.
Thanks, Erin, for joining us here. Readers can learn more about this interesting character by picking up any one—or better yet, all three—of the Haunted Shores Mysteries, BLOOD ON THE CHESAPEAKE, CRIMSON AT CAPE MAY, and SCARLET AT CRYSTAL RIVER.
“This is another masterpiece from Randy Overbeck. His excellent writing style has left me speechless for one more time. He writes in a way that makes you feel what the characters feel and you have no choice but to partake in the journey with them.” ★★★★★—Ioanna’s Reviews, Greece
