High atop a tree
The creek looks so far away
Live in the moment
Depression era
Wild spring onions are a treat
Crawdads make fine stew
Momma makes biscuits
Daddy smokes the hogs and fish
Granny says, don’t sass
Learn to sew your clothes
Work the fields to earn your pay
Thank God, you’re alive
She talks of her youth
Grateful for what life taught her
And that she can share
